Prediabetes

The best time to act on diabetes is before it starts. Structured prevention that actually works.

What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range — HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4%, or fasting glucose between 100 and 125 mg/dL. It is a warning light, not a life sentence.

Without intervention, a large proportion of people with prediabetes progress to type 2 diabetes within 5–10 years. With structured lifestyle change, that progression can very often be prevented or substantially delayed — this is one of the best-proven results in preventive medicine.

Common Symptoms

Usually no symptoms — found on blood tests
Fatigue or energy dips after meals
Increased waist circumference
Darkened skin patches at neck or armpits
Mild increase in thirst or urination
Family history of diabetes as a red flag
High blood pressure or cholesterol often co-exist
Sugar cravings and post-meal sleepiness

Causes & Risk Factors

Prediabetes is early insulin resistance: muscles, liver and fat cells respond sluggishly to insulin, so the pancreas overworks to compensate. Central weight gain, inactivity, poor sleep, chronic stress and genetics all contribute. It is common — and commonly missed because it rarely causes symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is prediabetes reversible?
Yes, very often. Landmark studies show structured lifestyle change reduces progression to diabetes by around 58% — and many people return to normal glucose levels.
Do I need medication for prediabetes?
Usually lifestyle change is first-line. In some higher-risk cases doctors may discuss medication, but the foundation is always diet, activity, sleep and weight.
How often should I re-test?
Typically every 3–6 months while actively working on reversal, then annually once stable. Your doctor will set your schedule.
